In 1944, a gentleman, filled with gratitude for a healing of paralysis, saw the need for place in New York where Christian Scientists could receive care while relying upon prayer for healing. Joined by other Christian Scientists, the group incorporated themselves in 1947 and bought a building on East 71^st which they named the Manhattan Sanitorium. Following renovations, the first patient was admitted in 1949.

In 1957, the group sold the building after the City of New York imposed extensive structural standards, and purchased a home in Bedford Hills, NY, 40 miles north of Manhattan. After renovations, the 17-room house was able to accommodate ten patients. The organization changed its name to High Ridge House, Inc. After nine years, it became evident that they needed a larger facility.

Following an extensive search, the Board of Trustees approved the purchase of High Ridge House’s current property in Riverdale, the Bronx, in 1967. With financial support from Christian Scientists across the Tri-State area, they began construction of our 30-room building. In 1970, they welcomed five patients who were cared for by seven Christian Science nurses.

Since then, High Ridge House has continued to meet the needs of the broader Christian Science community. We’ve opened our doors to receive those needing Christian Science nursing care, ventured out to provide skilled home care, embraced church members with Christian visits, and welcomed our church family to activities at our beloved facility.

For more than 75 years, High Ridge House has provided loving, skilled Christian Science nursing care for our community. Our experience brings to mind Mrs. Eddy’s words from the Preface of our textbook— “To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, today is big with blessings.”

High Ridge House is:
